Description
A depiction of Meguro Fudo-do (Ryusen-ji) in Tokyo, one of the five great Fudo Myo-o temples of the Edo region. The temple's formal designation, rendered in the title as Meguro Fudo-do, refers specifically to the principal hall enshrining Fudo Myo-o, the immovable deity of Buddhist esoteric tradition. Hasui's treatment of the subject likely emphasizes the interplay between the historic wooden architecture and its natural surroundings—stone pathways, lanterns, and dense planting that screen the complex from the surrounding city. This print is closely related to the Fudo Hall at Meguro composition but may present a different angle, season, or lighting condition, as Hasui frequently returned to beloved subjects across multiple editions. Printed in the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) manner with careful color registration and graduated atmospheric washes on [washi](/glossary/washi), it reflects Hasui's sustained interest in documenting sacred and historic sites of the Kanto region.
