Description
Among Hasui's several Nara compositions, this third design in the group isolates a particular view or temporal condition within the ancient park and temple city. Nara's sacred deer—protected since the eighth century and integral to the site's visual identity—may appear as silhouetted figures in the middle ground, while the pagoda or forested hillside of Wakakusayama forms the backdrop. Hasui's Nara prints are characterized by spaciousness, the flat basin landscape lending itself to compositions with extended horizontal movement and expansive sky. The shin-hanga process, with its ability to produce delicate gradated washes through bokashi techniques, was well suited to rendering Nara's distinctive atmosphere of pale late-afternoon sunlight or soft autumn mist. This print likely reflects Hasui's continued engagement with the classical Japanese landscape tradition in which Nara represented cultural and spiritual depth.
