Description
This impression of Ochanomizu presents the Kanda River gorge at a site where Tokyo's geological underpinning—the Musashino plateau's edge—is made visible in the cut embankment walls. Hasui's depiction navigates the coexistence of the old waterway and the modern railway infrastructure that crossed it, finding a compositional angle that preserves the scene's visual coherence. The curved railway viaduct, a prominent feature of Ochanomizu, may appear as a structural element framing the sky, while the river below reflects the surrounding walls and sky in a band of graduated color. This variant impression may differ from related prints in edition, color, or publisher, as the Ochanomizu subject was produced across multiple printings given its popularity as a Tokyo meisho.
