Description
This is a second treatment of the Ukimidō pavilion at Katata, Ōmi Province — the small lakeside hall of Mangetsu-ji temple on Lake Biwa that Hasui depicted in more than one version. Variant prints of the same subject in Hasui's oeuvre often reflect different seasons, times of day, or revisions made between print runs. This version may differ from its counterpart in the treatment of light — perhaps a winter snowfall muting the landscape, or a summer evening setting the sky in amber — while preserving the essential compositional element of the hall rising above its own reflection in the lake. Differences in ink application, color register, and bokashi gradation between versions can be significant, as Watanabe Shozaburo's workshop updated blocks and color keys across editions spanning many years of Hasui's career.
