Description
This print depicting Ono in the Mito area of Ibaraki Prefecture is closely related to the formally titled Mito Ono composition, and likely represents either a preliminary edition, an alternate publisher's edition, or a variant title given to the same design at different points in its printing history. Shin-hanga prints were sometimes issued under slightly different titles by different publishers or in different series contexts, complicating the cataloguing of related designs. The Mito district offered Hasui natural and architectural scenery removed from the more frequently depicted landscapes of the Tokaido corridor or Tokyo Bay — giving the series in which it appears a documentary dimension, recording places that might otherwise go unrepresented in the print record. Whether the design shows a wooded hillside, a shrine precinct, or a river view near the city, it would reflect Hasui's consistent compositional intelligence: a clearly structured picture plane, controlled spatial recession, and atmospheric color achieved through the layered interaction of multiple carved blocks.
