Description
From the series Collected Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition (Nihon fūkei shū higashi Nihon hen), this print records the commercial harbor at Otaru on Hokkaido's western coast. Otaru was a significant trading port in the Meiji and Taisho periods, its stone warehouses and canal-side wharves providing Hasui with architectural subjects distinct from the temple gardens and resort coastlines of Honshu compositions. The pier composition likely features moored vessels, timber or masonry quay structures, and an expanse of sea or harbor water with the characteristic grey-green palette Hasui applied to northern coastal subjects. The Eastern Japan series marks Hasui's engagement with Hokkaido's industrial and port landscapes, less frequently treated in earlier shin-hanga travel albums than the canonical sites of Kyoto or the Tokaido.
