Description

A second design of Setakamui Rock on the Shakotan coast of Hokkaido suggests a return visit to the subject or a companion composition offering an alternate vantage, season, or atmospheric condition. The volcanic formation's distinctive silhouette—isolated in coastal waters—accommodated multiple compositional approaches: a close framing that emphasized the rock's scale and texture against a narrow band of sea and sky, or a more distant view that placed it within the broader horizontal expanse of the Sea of Japan coastline. Hasui's Hokkaido prints were among his more geographically unusual subjects, representing a Japan of geological severity and harder climate than the pastoral Honshu landscapes that formed the majority of his catalogue. Both versions of Setakamui employ the cool, restricted palette appropriate to the Sea of Japan coast—predominantly blues, grays, and dark rock tones—with the quality of overcast or stormy light unifying the composition.
