Description

This design of Seto in Owari Province (Bishu) depicts the ceramic-producing town at the eastern edge of the Owari plain in Aichi Prefecture—a site historically significant as one of Japan's principal kiln centers. Two recorded versions of this subject suggest either different seasons, different sections of the townscape, or different moments of light. Seto's character as a craft town—defined by the infrastructure of ceramic production rather than commerce or pilgrimage—gave it a visual character distinct from castle towns or post stations: lower buildings, clay-dust roads near the kiln districts, the particular gray of wood-fired smoke over tile rooftops. Hasui's treatment would have captured the atmospheric quality of the town at a specific season and time of day rather than documenting its industrial function. The restricted palette of muted browns, grays, and overcast blues appropriate to an inland provincial setting distinguishes these Bishu designs from Hasui's coastal or mountain prints.
