Description
Bishu is the classical designation for Owari Province, now Aichi Prefecture in central Japan. Seto, a city within that province, has produced ceramic ware since at least the Kamakura period; the term 'setomono' became a general Japanese word for pottery. This design likely depicts Seto town or its immediate rural surroundings—low tile-roofed buildings oriented around the ceramic industry, the clay-clay soil of the river terraces used for raw material, or the broader landscape of the Owari plain. Hasui's provincial travel prints document sites across Japan less celebrated than the canonical scenic spots of Hiroshige's era, and his Bishu designs situate the ceramic-producing region within this geographic survey. The flat terrain of the Owari plain and the gray-tile rooflines of a craft-producing town would have imposed a quieter, more horizontal composition than the dramatic coastal or mountain subjects in his catalogue.
