Description
This print is from the second installment of Hasui's celebrated travel series Tabi miyage (Souvenirs of Travel), published by Watanabe Shozaburo in the early 1920s. Shimohonda-machi is a district in Kanazawa, the castle city in Ishikawa Prefecture known as 'Little Kyoto' for its preserved samurai quarters, geisha districts, and traditional crafts. Hasui depicted the street or canal in winter or wet weather — conditions that flattened color into moody tonal arrangements suited to shin-hanga printing. The Tabi miyage series documented Hasui's sketching journeys across Japan, and the Kanazawa compositions often capture the city's distinctive earthen-walled merchant streets or the dark reflective surfaces of its canals under rain or snow.
