Description
This print depicts the new river embankment (shinkawabata) near the Shinakawa bridge in Handa, a port town in Owari Province (present-day Aichi Prefecture), historically referred to as Bishu. Handa's canals, used for transporting sake and vinegar, provided Hasui with characteristic low-horizon water compositions. The scene likely shows a tranquil stretch of waterway lined with storehouses or willow trees, with the bridge providing a horizontal anchor across the middle ground. Hasui's bokashi gradations in the sky and water create tonal unity, while the still surface of the canal mirrors architecture above. This variant — one of multiple treatments of the same subject — may differ from related prints in season, light condition, or vantage point.
