Description
A second print in the Shirozaki-Kinosaki group, this work depicts the coastal Tajima district of northern Hyogo Prefecture, where the Sea of Japan shoreline and the famous Kinosaki Onsen resort occupy the same small geographic area. Kinosaki's visual identity rests on its narrow canal flanked by weeping willows, stone-paved streets, and lantern-lit bathhouses—a concentrated atmospheric environment that Hasui captured with precision. A variant composition from a related print, this version likely alters the season, lighting, or compositional vantage while treating the same subject matter. The multiple editions of this subject in Hasui's catalog reflect both the artistic richness he found in the location and the commercial demand from collectors for views of well-known Japanese hot spring destinations.
