Description
The third in the Shirozaki-Kinosaki group, this print further explores the visual territory of northern Hyogo Prefecture's Tajima coast and Kinosaki Onsen. Hasui's sustained interest in a single district across multiple prints reflects his method of making repeated observational sketches during extended travel, then developing distinct finished compositions from the accumulated material back in his Tokyo studio. Kinosaki Onsen's seasonal character changes substantially: cherry blossoms along the canal in spring, yukata-clad bathers in summer and autumn, snow-laden willows and steaming bathhouses in winter. The specific season or atmospheric condition depicted in this version would distinguish it meaningfully from the companion prints. Multiple woodblock registrations allow the subtle tonal shifts essential to conveying damp coastal air or the warm glow of bathhouse lanterns against evening darkness.
