Description
This print connects Shirozaki cape with Kinosaki Onsen, the celebrated hot spring town of Tajima district (northern Hyogo Prefecture) known for its willow-lined canal, seven public bathhouses, and traditional wooden ryokan architecture. Kinosaki lies a short distance inland from the Sea of Japan coast; Shirozaki is a coastal feature of the same district. Hasui's treatment would draw a compositional link between the inland thermal resort and its maritime coastal setting. This is one of multiple versions of the subject, suggesting Hasui explored the site under different conditions or from different vantage points. The Tajima coastline's rocky Sea of Japan shoreline contrasts with the sheltered thermal town atmosphere, and the distinction between these two landscape modes may be the organizing tension of the image.
