Description
This print depicts Shirozaki, a rocky coastal promontory along the Sea of Japan in the Tajima district of Hyogo Prefecture, near the celebrated hot spring town of Kinosaki. Hasui characteristically renders the rugged shoreline through careful gradation of the sky and water using bokashi, shifting from deep blue at the horizon to pale grey near the land. The exposed rock formations along the coast create a strong diagonal thrust into the composition, while sparse pines cling to the headland above. This variant likely represents a later printing state, with possible tonal adjustments to the water or sky blocks distinguishing it from earlier impressions of the same design.
