Description
Hasui's second treatment of the Meoto Iwa at Futamigaura presents a different lighting condition or compositional framing than his companion print of the subject. Hasui regularly returned to favored scenic sites under alternate atmospheric conditions, and the Futami rocks—with their singular profile and Shinto associations—invited multiple interpretations. One version may show the rocks under overcast morning light with muted water and pale sky; another may use the golden warmth of approaching dawn to dramatize the silhouettes. The torii atop the larger rock and the curve of the shimenawa rope between the formations remain compositional constants, while sky coloration, sea state, and the coloring of wet rock surfaces shift. Both prints participate in the extended tradition of Futamigaura imagery stretching back through Hiroshige, and both demonstrate the shin-hanga system's capacity to render sacred coastal scenery with technical precision across multiple printings from the same or revised blocks.
