Description

This print from Tabi miyage dai isshū (Souvenirs of Travel, First Series, 1919) depicts Tsutanuma, a cluster of small interconnected marshes set within old-growth beech forest near Tsuta Onsen in Aomori Prefecture. The ponds, named individually after hues of Buddhist prayer beads, form one of the most celebrated natural landscapes of the Tohoku region, their still surfaces reflecting the forest canopy in conditions of low wind. Hasui's composition likely centers on the marsh surface catching sky light between the framing tree trunks, rendered through horizontal bands of color that mirror the blues and greens visible through the canopy overhead. This subject exemplifies the shin-hanga movement's interest in presenting regional natural scenery to urban audiences, framing landscapes encountered via Japan's expanding rail network through the refined aesthetic sensibility of trained artists. The oban-format print would employ precise registration of multiple color blocks to achieve the tonal complexity of dappled forest light on still water.
