Description
This variant of the Tsutanuma Marsh subject represents one of Hasui's multiple treatments of the beech-forest ponds near Tsuta Onsen in Aomori Prefecture, likely differing from companion prints in its seasonal or atmospheric conditions. The image may show the marsh under early morning mist, with vapor lifting from the water surface into the lower canopy, or in late winter with bare beech branches reflected in ice-edged shallows. Compositionally, Hasui's marsh prints characteristically work through alternating near and far planes: reeds or grasses at the immediate water margin, the open reflective surface extending into the middle ground, and the forest screen behind. Color gradations in sky and water areas, achieved through graduated bokashi applied by the printer's baren in successive passes, lend these scenes their characteristic soft luminosity. Multiple treatments of Tsutanuma in Hasui's catalog reflect his practice of building systematic pictorial knowledge of locations that rewarded repeated visits across seasons.
