Description

A second state or edition of the Tsukishima snow subject within the 'Twenty Views of Tokyo' series. The slight variation in romanization between the two Tsukishima prints in the series may indicate different print runs, different title-block woodblocks, or minor compositional adjustments made between editions. In Hasui's snow prints, publishers sometimes issued multiple editions with subtle color variations: sky gradations shifted from blue-gray to violet-gray, shadow tonalities adjusted, or the depth of the dark water altered to change the overall luminosity of the composition. This second version shares the same subject as its companion, the canal-facing row of wooden machiya on Tsukishima's reclaimed waterfront under snow, but its tonal or compositional distinctions reflect the editorial process common to shin-hanga publishing. Successful designs were re-cut, re-colored, or reissued with updated title cartouches, sometimes across different decades of the print's commercial life. Both versions document the same historically specific urban fabric of old Shitamachi Tokyo that was rapidly disappearing through the Showa period.
