Description
A shin-hanga print by Kawase Hasui, likely depicting a river scene with reflections on the water surface. Hasui returned frequently to rivers, canals, and lake shores as compositional subjects, exploiting the reflective qualities of calm water to double vertical elements — willows, lantern poles, bridge pilings — within the picture plane. The still water surface, rendered through horizontal bokashi gradations and carefully modulated color washes, creates a meditative quality central to the shin-hanga sensibility. An arched bridge or low-slung boat may punctuate the middle distance. The sky, graduated from deep blue or purple at the zenith to warm amber at the horizon, suggests dawn or dusk, the transitional light conditions Hasui most consistently sought in his on-site sketches. Printed on dampened washi paper to achieve soft ink absorption, the finished impression conveys the humidity and quietude of water in the Japanese landscape.
