Description
Hasui produced prints across all four seasons with attention to the quality of light specific to each: the hazy warmth of summer evenings, the crystalline cold of winter mornings, the atmospheric diffusion of spring rain, the golden slant of autumn afternoon light. An untitled work from his series could depict a pathway through cedar or cryptomeria forest, a village shrine at dusk, or a harbor with boats reflected in still water — subjects he returned to throughout his career with variations of season, time of day, and weather condition. His collaboration with Watanabe's specialized printers — who might apply thirty or more block impressions to complete a single print — allowed these atmospheric distinctions to be rendered with a fidelity unavailable to artists working alone in the [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) tradition.
