Description

Dated 1921 and published within the Tabi miyage dai nishû (Souvenirs of Travel, Second Series), this print records Hasui's travels to the Urahama coastline in Echigo Province, present-day Niigata Prefecture. The Tabi miyage series, launched by publisher Watanabe Shozaburo around 1919, drew on Hasui's on-site sketches made during regional journeys and formalized them as numbered publishing editions. The Urahama subject likely depicts a fishing beach with vessels drawn up on shore, pine trees along the waterline, and the Sea of Japan's characteristic overcast sky. As a dated Taisho-period impression, this print documents an early moment in Hasui's career and the shin-hanga movement itself, before his compositional approach reached its mature form. The print's year inscription places it among the foundational works in Hasui's catalog of regional travel subjects.
