Description
The Iwasaki family, founders of Mitsubishi zaibatsu, maintained several estates in Tokyo that combined Western architectural styles with formal Japanese garden design, including the Kyu-Iwasaki-tei in Taito Ward. This print likely shows a formal garden associated with the villa — raked gravel, stone lanterns, a pond garden, or a Western-style verandah set against clipped hedges and pines. Hasui's documentation of private estates and villa gardens reflects the shin-hanga movement's interest in capturing Japan's modernizing landscape alongside its traditional scenery. The subject offers architectural geometry set against organic garden forms, a visual dynamic distinct from Hasui's more characteristic rural or coastal compositions. The Meiji-era blend of European and Japanese spatial conventions visible in such estates made them subjects of contemporary documentary interest during Hasui's working period.
