Description
This print presents Hasui's foundational design for the Evening Snow at Edogawa subject. The Edogawa, flowing along the eastern boundary of the former city of Edo, carried strong historical associations that Hasui mobilized in his meisho-e conception of the scene. The composition likely shows a twilit river view with snow falling against a graduated sky, bare-branched trees or reed-grass framing the water's edge. The absence of a numeric suffix in this slug suggests it may be the primary or earliest recorded impression. Hasui's shin-hanga practice, supervised by publisher Doi Sadaichi, employed a team of specialist block cutters and printers whose collaborative craft produced the fine gradations and clean registration that distinguish this type of landscape print from its ukiyo-e predecessors.
