Description
This impression of the Yasugi Kiyomizu subject uses a shortened title omitting the word "Temple," suggesting it may belong to a different series context or publication format from the more fully titled versions. The subject itself remains the Tendai Buddhist temple in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, with its distinctive wooden veranda structure projecting over the forested hillside. Hasui's compositional approach to the site — the gray timber of the butai against deep green forest, the roofline against open sky — would remain consistent across its various published appearances, while printing variables distinguish individual impressions. The print reflects Hasui's broader project of documenting provincial Japan's architectural and religious heritage during a period of rapid industrialization, preserving visual records of sites that drew pilgrims and seasonal visitors but remained largely unknown outside their immediate regions. Watanabe's publishing network gave such subjects national commercial reach.
