Description
Number 27 in Yamamoto's 'Light, Time, Silence' series, this print continues a sequence the artist began in 1992 and has since extended past thirty numbered states. The series is executed in stone lithography, a medium in which the image is drawn with greasy crayon or tusche directly onto a flat limestone block; the resulting prints carry a softness and tonal continuity that distinguish them from the line-based clarity of woodblock or the sharp edges of screenprint. Subjects across the series — wooden chairs, staircases, doorways, modest interior corners — are rendered as if seen during the quiet hours of the day, with their specific identification subordinated to the play of incident light. Yamamoto's MFA in oil painting underpins this attention to ambient atmosphere; the prints function less as records of particular rooms than as studies of how light occupies them. This approach connects 'Light, Time, Silence' to his parallel 'Sea Breeze' and 'Nostalgic Scenery' series.
