Description
The thirtieth numbered state of 'Light, Time, Silence,' this lithograph belongs to the series Yamamoto has pursued since 1992. By the time the count reaches thirty, the series has effectively become a private archive of inhabited interiors — chairs, staircase landings, door frames — observed and re-observed under different qualities of natural light. Each print is pulled from a separately worked limestone matrix; the medium's responsiveness to crayon, tusche, and the subtractive scraping of half-tones gives Yamamoto control over a continuous gray scale from near-white to deep black. There is no color and no caption: the title and the running number do the work of locating the image. The duration of the project, across more than three decades, places Yamamoto within a Japanese print tradition that values the long-form series — a structural principle inherited from earlier practitioners who organized work around themes of place, season, or interior life.
