Description
Designated 'M – C' rather than carrying a serial number, this lithograph stands outside the numbered run of 'Light, Time, Silence' while sharing the series' subject and technical premises. The lettered designation is consistent with the convention by which printmakers distinguish variants, états, or editions issued in parallel to a numbered sequence. As with the numbered states, the print is a monochrome stone lithograph showing a quietly inhabited interior architectural subject of the kind — wooden chairs, staircases, doorways — Yamamoto has made his sustained motif since beginning the series in 1992. Stone lithography permits the unhurried tonal modeling on which the series depends, and the sheet's unprinted areas operate as actively as its printed ones. Within Yamamoto's broader output, which also includes the 'Sea Breeze' and 'Nostalgic Scenery' series, lettered variants such as this one offer alternative readings of recurring subjects without breaking the stable visual language the title establishes.
