Sea Breeze C

The third lettered print in the Sea Breeze series. Sequencing through A, B, C indicates a deliberate exploration of slight differences within a fixed thematic frame, in keeping with Yamamoto's wider practice of sustained serial work. Lithographic monochrome and an emphasis on atmospheric subject matter place the print in continuity with the Light, Time, Silence cycle despite the change of locale from interior to coast. As with the earlier letters in the sequence, the work would be drawn on stone and pulled in a single ink, the gradient between sea and sky carried by tonal modulation rather than line. The reflective, unhurried register — reflective light, reflective surface — is consistent across the artist's mature output, in which the discrete subject matters less than the careful drawing of tonal progressions across the sheet.
