Description
Enjoying the Evening Cool at Ryogoku Bridge in Edo (Edo Ryogokubashi yusuzumi no kei), a color woodblock print in horizontal o-oban format held by the Art Institute of Chicago, depicts the most famous summer entertainment in Edo: the evening cooling-off (yusuzumi) gatherings on and around the Ryogoku Bridge that crossed the Sumida River. The bridge and its surrounding embankments became, every summer, a vast open-air entertainment district where boats with lanterns plied the river, food vendors and storytellers worked the crowds, and ordinary Edo townspeople escaped the city's stifling heat. The uki-e perspectival treatment is well suited to the scene's deep recession: the bridge stretches into the distance, the river opens laterally, the boats and crowds are arranged in receding planes. Masayoshi captures the festive density of the gathering, the small figural details that bring the scene to life, and the characteristic Edo combination of urban infrastructure and popular leisure. This print is an important record of Edo's social life as well as a fine example of Masayoshi's uki-e mastery. The Art Institute's holding preserves the work as a key example of his urban landscape printmaking outside the Chushingura series.
