Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
"Beyond the Wind" or "The Other Side of the Wind" (風のかなた, kaze no kanata) — a title with philosophical as well as meteorological resonance. Kanata means far away, the distant place that cannot be reached or, perhaps, the horizon of perception beyond which nothing can be seen. The combination with kaze (wind) suggests the wind as guide to a place beyond the visible world — the wind that comes from beyond the horizon carries news of distant places, carries the breath of a world larger than any single viewpoint can encompass. Nakajima Kiyoshi's compositions are often concerned with this sense of the world's largeness pressing in on the intimate scale of a single figure.
