Li Hongzhang — the Qing dynasty's pre-eminent statesman and the official responsible for managing China's disastrous war with Japan — is the target of this September 1894 satirical print. Kiyochika's Nippon Banzai! Hyakusen Hyakushō series, published by the Osaka firm Akiyama, was a vehicle for comic and propagandistic commentary on the war. Li is depicted with exaggerated features and a comically troubled expression, the "headache" being Japan's string of military victories.
A Big Headache for Li Hongzhang was created by Kobayashi Kiyochika (小林清親) in September 1894.
