Kudanzaka — the hill leading to the Yasukuni Shrine in northern Tokyo — is shown here on a May evening, cherry blossoms spent and the lantern-lit slope quiet in the gathering dusk. Kiyochika frequently depicted Tokyo's hills and embankments in the transitional light of dusk and early evening, capturing the moment when the city's Meiji-era gas lamps or traditional lanterns began to compete with fading daylight. The soft spring atmosphere distinguishes this work from his more dramatic nocturnal compositions.
