Ueno's Tōshō-gū shrine — one of the oldest Tokugawa-era monuments in Tokyo — is buried under heavy snowfall in this undated woodblock print. The vermilion lacquer of the shrine buildings glows warmly against the white-laden branches of the surrounding cryptomeria trees, a contrast Kiyochika heightens by rendering the sky as a flat, pale grey. Snow scenes at Tokyo's historic shrines were a favourite subject in the meisho genre, and Kiyochika brings to the format his characteristic sensitivity to ambient light.
