Description

This portrait print belongs to Kiyochika's series Rikkai gunjin kōmyō kagami (Mirror of Army and Navy Heroes), produced in the wake of the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895). Admiral Kabayama Sukenori commanded Japanese naval forces during the Taiwan campaign and served as the first Governor-General of Taiwan following Japan's victory. The series format follows the tradition of yakusha-e actor portraits adapted to military celebrity: the subject rendered in half-length or full-length against a plain or minimally detailed background, identified by inscription. Kiyochika emphasizes the admiral's naval uniform, medals, and commanding bearing, producing a form of commemorative portraiture that circulated widely as popular prints celebrating Meiji military expansion.
