Description

This print depicts a major conflagration at Ryogoku viewed from Asakusa Bridge, one of the great crossings over the Sumida River in Meiji-era Tokyo. Kiyochika's kosen-ga approach is particularly suited to fire subjects: the roiling smoke column illuminated from within by orange and red flames creates the dramatic chiaroscuro contrast that defines his mature style. The bridge structure and any figures present would be rendered as dark silhouettes against the lurid glow reflecting off the river surface below, a compositional device Kiyochika employed repeatedly when depicting nocturnal catastrophes. Ryogoku was densely populated and suffered several destructive fires during the Meiji period. The print belongs to an untitled series of Tokyo views, suggesting it was produced in response to a specific incident as both documentary record and aesthetic statement about the volatility of the modernizing city.
