"Blockhead" is a December 1894 satirical print from Kiyochika's Nippon Banzai! series, targeting — as was typical of the series — Qing Chinese military commanders or diplomats during the First Sino-Japanese War. The caricature, rendered with the exaggerated features and comic staging Kiyochika deployed throughout the series, reflects the jingoistic confidence of Japanese popular culture at a moment when Japanese forces were sweeping Qing armies from Korea and Manchuria.
Blockhead was created by Kobayashi Kiyochika (小林清親) in December 1894.
Blockhead depicts figures and portraits.
Blockhead measures 35.2 × 23.3 cm (Oban format).
