Description
Ryōgoku — the great entertainment district and home of the annual summer fireworks on the Sumida River — is seen here from Motoyanagi Bridge, its familiar silhouette of the Ryōgoku Bridge visible in the distance. Kiyochika's multiple views of Ryōgoku document a district that was, in his time, transitioning from Edo-period pleasure ground to Meiji urban neighbourhood, losing its teahouses and performance spaces to brick buildings and rail lines. This undated variant preserves the pre-transformation view with the documentary sensitivity of his best meisho work.
