Description

Enoshima — the rocky island and Shinto shrine complex rising from Sagami Bay southwest of Yokohama — is captured in this 1896 nishiki-e from Kiyochika's Famous Sights of Japan (Nihon meishō zue) series. The series, which Kiyochika produced in the mid-to-late 1890s, extended his meisho documentary project beyond Tokyo to landscapes across Japan, applying the atmospheric sensitivity of his Tokyo work to nationally celebrated scenic sites. Enoshima's dramatic sea cliffs and pilgrimage paths made it one of the series' most visually compelling subjects.
