Description

This print, one of two known versions depicting the same subject, shows Ikkokubashi (One-Stone Bridge) in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo at evening. The bridge, which crossed a canal near the Bank of Japan and the old city center, occupied a commercially and symbolically significant position in Meiji Tokyo. Kiyochika's handling of the subject would emphasize the play of fading light on water and stone, with the bridge's solid masonry or wooden structure silhouetted against a graded sky. Reflections of lamp or lantern light in the canal below are characteristic of his kosen-ga method. The existence of a second version of this composition suggests Kiyochika returned to the subject or that different printing states exist, perhaps with variations in the color of the sky or the degree of illumination in the foreground. Such variations, achieved through alterations to the printing blocks or the application of pigment, demonstrate the flexibility within the fixed woodblock medium and the importance Kiyochika placed on precise atmospheric calibration.
