Tsukudajima — the fishing community island at the mouth of the Sumida — is shown in fine weather following a rainstorm, wet cobblestones and damp rooftiles glinting in the returning sunlight. This circa-1880 nishiki-e belongs to the core of Kiyochika's Tokyo meisho output, when he was systematically documenting the capital's waterfront districts in different atmospheric conditions. The post-rain clarification of light was a particular specialty: the world washed clean, colours intensified, reflections pooled on every surface.
