Description
Ike-no-hata, the area bordering Shinobazu Pond at Ueno, hosted summer fireworks displays that drew large crowds during the Meiji period. Kiyochika rendered this subject across multiple compositions, and this print — identified by its subtitle Ike-no-hata hanabi — likely shows chrysanthemum bursts exploding above the pond, their reflections fragmenting across the water below. The composition exploits the dual light source of fireworks reflected in still water, a device that allowed Kiyochika to extend his luminescence experiments across the full vertical register of an oban sheet. Figures along the embankment, rendered as silhouettes or softly lit forms, establish scale and anchor the festive atmosphere. The bokashi work in the night sky transitions from deep indigo at the margins to luminous white and gold at the explosion's center.
