Description
This second composition of the Ikenohata fireworks subject offers a distinct compositional approach from its pair, suggesting Kiyochika explored different vantage points or moments within the same festival setting. The Ikenohata embankment along Shinobazu Pond was a favored summer destination in Meiji Tokyo, and multiple compositions allowed for variations in crowd placement, sky treatment, and the choice of exploding versus ascending rockets. Where one version may emphasize the burst overhead, this composition may shift weight toward the reflection in the pond or the crowd at the water's edge. Across both treatments, Kiyochika's handling of the transitional zone between illuminated explosion and surrounding night sky — achieved through careful bokashi gradation on washi — demonstrates the technical innovation that distinguished his fireworks prints from earlier Hiroshige treatments of the same subject.
