Description
Miho no Matsubara (Miho Pine Grove) in Suruga Province — present-day Shizuoka — was a celebrated meisho, or famous place, prized for its panoramic view of Mount Fuji across Suruga Bay. This print likely positions a fishing or sailing vessel in the foreground bay, with Fuji rising in the distance above the pine-lined spit of land. Kiyochika's characteristic tonal treatment would modulate the sky and water through layered bokashi printing, creating a depth of atmosphere that distinguishes his coastal views from the flatter compositions of earlier landscape traditions. The combination of maritime activity, the iconic pine grove, and the distant volcano places this firmly within meisho-e conventions while inflecting them with his Meiji-era realism.
