Description

This print from one of Kiyochika's Tokyo view series depicts Ikkoku Bridge at dusk, a crossing in the commercial district of Meiji-era Tokyo near Nihonbashi. The evening hour allows Kiyochika to deploy his signature kosen-ga technique, balancing residual sky luminosity against the warm punctuation of paper lanterns and their shimmering reflections on the water below. Figures crossing the bridge are rendered as silhouettes against the fading light, a compositional device Kiyochika borrowed from Western chiaroscuro traditions and adapted to the woodblock medium. Graduated bokashi across the sky transitions from pale amber at the horizon to deep indigo overhead. As part of his landmark series documenting a rapidly modernizing Tokyo, the print records architecture and street life in a city where gas lamps were beginning to replace paper lanterns and Western-style buildings stood alongside traditional merchant structures.
