Description

The inner valley at Tsukigase — a ravine in Nara Prefecture famous for its wild plum blossoms — is depicted in this 1897 nishiki-e from Kiyochika's Famous Sights of Japan series. Tsukigase's plum groves along the Nabari River attracted visitors from across the Kinai region in late winter and early spring, and Kiyochika's version captures the dramatic topography of the narrow gorge with the same atmospheric sensitivity he had applied to Tokyo landscapes. The Nihon meishō zue series extended his meisho tradition to destinations far beyond the capital.
