Description

This print records the Ishihara Bridge along the Okawabata district, the eastern bank of the Sumida River in Tokyo, a zone of warehouses, boatyards, and traditional merchant activity that retained its Edo character well into the Meiji period. Bridge views gave Kiyochika the compositional structure he favored: a strong horizontal element spanning the picture plane, beneath which water could be used to reflect light sources and create luminous depth. Depending on the time of day depicted, light might emanate from lanterns on the bridge, a setting sun behind riverside buildings, or the diffuse glow of overcast sky on still water. Figures crossing the bridge would be reduced to silhouette, consistent with his approach to human presence as incidental rather than narrative. The print belongs to the body of urban views in which Kiyochika documented the transitional Meiji cityscape along Tokyo's river districts before modernization altered their character.
