Description
Kaiunbashi — the "Prosperity Bridge" — spanned the Nihonbashi River adjacent to the newly opened First National Bank (Dai-Ichi Kokuritsu Ginko) in Tokyo's financial district. The bank, established in 1873 as Japan's first Western-style financial institution, occupied a distinctive Western-influenced building that became one of the most photographed landmarks of Meiji modernisation. Kiyochika's print documents the juxtaposition of Edo-period bridge infrastructure with the new brick-and-mortar institutions of modern finance.
