Description
This print depicts Tameike, the large reservoir that occupied the low-lying district near Akasaka in Edo-period and Meiji Tokyo. Kiyochika renders the scene with the atmospheric light treatment characteristic of his kosen-ga style, likely capturing the reflection of sky or artificial illumination on still water. The Tameike area, with its open expanse and surrounding embankments, offered the artist a subject suited to his interest in tonal gradation and the interplay between water surfaces and ambient light. Bokashi gradations in the sky and water passages would have been technically demanding, requiring the printer to work wet pigment across broad, unfeatured areas. The print documents a corner of Tokyo that was substantially altered as the Meiji government reorganized the city's infrastructure.
