Description

Mannenbashi Bridge spans a river in the Sokokura Yumoto area of Hakone, the mountainous resort region southwest of Tokyo known for its hot springs and dramatic scenery. The Japanese title (箱根底倉湯本万年橋) specifies the location precisely: bottom-village Yumoto, the gateway spa town of Hakone. Mountain stream subjects offered Kiyochika compositional opportunities quite different from his urban Tokyo work—clear rushing water over rocks, forested gorge walls, and the wooden or stone construction of a bridge framing the torrent beneath. The Hakone region attracted Meiji-era travelers by the new Tôkaidô rail line, and prints documenting its scenic sites served a tourist market alongside purely artistic purposes. Kiyochika's rendering of mountain water would likely emphasize the textural contrast between turbulent stream surface and the still mass of surrounding rock and vegetation.
